Tuesdays Tunes: “No Hole in My Head” by TOM JONES!

Videoclip: Tom Jones - No Hole In My Head
(Tom Jones 2021)

If I should choose a “hero” in the “art world”, meaning the all-encompassing word “ART”, it would be Tom Jones, for sure. And he never fails. Here he is, eighty years old and will be releasing, in just a few days, a new album. And I am not talking about some kind of nostalgia album of old songs. No way! These are new songs, yes, some covers of old songs, but things he has never released in his long life as a singer-entertainer. That’s like the Rolling Stones! Artists like these don’t get old, they keep renewing themselves. And that’s the way to stay fresh, to stay valid, to further your career even in you’re pushing eighty. Macca beware! Don’t you fall into the nostalgia pack…

Tom Jones – No Hole in My Head Lyrics | Genius Lyrics
(To be released on 23 APR 2021)

“No Hole in My Head” was written by the US singer-songwriter, activist Malvina Reynolds. Some of you might remember her for her other compositions such as, “Little Boxes,” sung by Pete Seeger.

But this one is very powerful and it starts off like this:

“Everybody thinks my head’s full of nothin’,

They wanna put their own special stuff in

Fill up the space with candy wrappers

Keep out sex and revolution

But there’s no hole in my head/Too bad.”

Tom Jones shares cover of Malvina Reynolds' 'No Hole In My Head' | NME

Here’s what the SUPERSTAR said about this song: “This song is powerful at any age. It’s about having confidence in who you are. Particularly during this time of a pervasive, boundless media that can wield so much influence, it’s more important than ever to know and be strong in your own self.” I think it’s tremendous advice, especially for this day and age and he is right, the media is boundless, they’ve taken liberties with our liberties, they have tried, through the decades, to put things in our head and they must fail. I remember Mick Jagger saying:

When I’m watchin’ my TV and a man comes on and tells me
How white my shirts can be
But, he can’t be a man ’cause he doesn’t smoke
The same cigarettes as me

And Mick was saying that back in 1965! That means the “brainwashing” began so long ago…

So I leave you with the new single…and the official video…by the great Tom Jones, a Welsh wonder of the song, for sure!

Strong vocals from Tom Jones. The melody and rhythm are not bad. But I miss the variety in this song.

    • Francisco Bravo Cabrera · 14 Days Ago

Definitely a strong voice. Thank you, I really appreciate it.

Yep, it’s a great spin on a “protest song” from the Sixties by Malvina Reynolds. Looks like Tom Jones got very edgy in his old age.

      • Francisco Bravo Cabrera · 14 Days Ago

Yes, you are right, it is from the 60’s but very relevant today and a much needed thought to float around the younger generations. Today we are in worse shape than in the 60’s, more under the control of the corporate government and more susceptible to their mind control. I think he made a great choice with that song and the fact that he wants to send that message is bloody perfect, I would say. Thank you, very much! I truly and sincerely appreciate your visit, always. Take good care and all the best,

All of us can only hope that, at the ripe old age of eighty, we are still as passionate about our art and craft. I loved the video, rife with metaphorical images and shot in a “noir” style. There is no denying his vocal abilities and he has always been a consummate entertainer and performer. Great post, my friend, showing that age truly is just a number. Stay well and all my best!

    • Francisco Bravo Cabrera · 14 Days Ago

The older I get the more I admire older people being active, being artistic and never succumbing to “old age”. An artist that re-invents himself at 80 is someone I greatly admire. Thank you my friend. Happy Tuesday and all the best to you,

  3. beth · 14 Days Ago

my mom adored tom and I grew up with many of his songs blasting on our stereo )

  4. Easymalc · 14 Days Ago

Correct me if I’m wrong Francesc, but it strikes me that this post is as much about your feelings at what’s going on in the world today as it is about the great voice of Tom Jones and his ability to still knock ’em out at 80 years old.

    • Francisco Bravo Cabrera · 14 Days Ago

No Malc, first I am impressed, no, in awe of Tom Jones and the fact that his voice, his energy, his outlook on life and the future is as young as a twenty something year old. He seems to still look to the future with wonder and with a certainty that he will be there. That is my main point. The second one…sorry I am a Gemini male, there’s always two things going on with me…is the things that are going on in the world, which I disagree with, which I am disgusted about and which I wish I could change…more or less that’s the reason for this post Malc, I would say. What do you think?

      • Easymalc · 14 Days Ago

Of course I realise that you have a great admiration for Tom Jones, as I do, but on your second point, and the one that I was emphasising, was that I think we are both really frustrated with how the world is today. I get so frustrated at times that I write all my feelings down on paper and then throw them in the bin 🙂 That way I’ve given vent to my feelings without upsetting anybody.

      • Francisco Bravo Cabrera · 14 Days Ago

My friend, you and I do the same thing. I write so many things down but I throw them in the bin as well. I think that at this age one needs to filter much of what one thinks but you are right, I am frustrated and angry about the control they have on us and worse, what we have willingly given “them”. But, when anger turns to frustration and frustration to violent thoughts, I remember that wine time is always near… 🙂
Take good care my friend and all the best to you!

      • Easymalc · 14 Days Ago

And when they start telling me to cut down on my wine consumption I get really annoyed 🙂 🙂

      • Francisco Bravo Cabrera · 14 Days Ago

        So true! 🍷

  5. Lokesh Sastya · 14 Days Ago

Worthy advice by Tom. He is right, the outside world is full of noise and hateful words. We should avoid reading and listen to such media.

  6. ourcrossings · 14 Days Ago

The prison themed video for his new single ‘No Hole In My Head’ is quite chilling and you got to admire the 80-year-old Welsh crooner who managed to produce four albums in ten years. He’s an absolute legend. Thanks for sharing and have a lovely day. Aiva 🙂

  7. topoet · 14 Days Ago

Malvina is equally as timeless – here’s a song of hers about restaurants that still holds true today – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mPyIDzVuXUA&t=7s

  8. cincinnatibabyhead · 13 Days Ago

Im liking Jones’s music that he’s been doing for the last few years. Thanks for pointing this out.

  9. azurea20 · 12 Days Ago

Vaya con los 80 años. Arriba la vitalidad. Un saludo.

    • Francisco Bravo Cabrera · 12 Days Ago

Increible la voz que tiene a esa edad…los galeses tienen muy buena voz y son longevos…
      Gracias Azurea y un abrazo,
