    Thanks for introducing me to an artist I had never heard of before Francesc. He was certainly very talented, although I’m not sure I would hang some of his stuff on my wall. That said, I thought the last picture of the girl in a veil was superb. He captured her facial expression behind that covering brilliantly – especially the eyes – they were hypnotic.

    • Hello Malc, and I am glad I was able to introduce you to an artist you did not already know. He is not that famous, perhaps because of the dark subjects he chose, but he was certainly a master of his craft. And yes, that last painting is superb.     New artist for me too! Although his works trend dark, it is the depth of the context which I find appealing. His symbolism leaves a lot to think on and that is what draws me to it. The works of earlier masters rarely have any vivid or bright colors. Is this because of the paints available to them or more a representation of the palette of the period?

    • I am glad you discovered a new artist and quite a good one, I must say…He was a member of the symbolism movement and greatly influenced the coming surrealists, and his palette was dark, I think because of the subject matter. In older times, going back to the early medieval paintings artists created their own colours from vegetable sources and even from some crustaceans and insects. They did get bright colours but the rules dictated that some things would be a certain colour and they stuck to the rules. It wasn’t until the Impressionists and then the abstract painters that colours became powerful and vivid, and I am talking only about European art because Asian art followed different rules and colours were always quite prevalent, especially in Indian art. Actually archaeologists tell us that many of the ancient Greek and Minoan buildings were painted with strong, bright, vibrant colours…
