Tuesdays Tunes: “Ordinary World” by Duran Duran

Duran Duran - Ordinary World (Official Music Video) - YouTube

Well, it was 1993 and I was writing on a play, a musical and every night I would get together with the Director of the show and we would go over the scenes I had written that day. Usually our sessions were very intense. Sometimes we invited some of the actors to do table readings, sometimes we did it ourselves. The idea was to feel the flow of the dialogue and how to introduce the music, the songs.

One night one of the actresses was scheduled to read and as she came in, greeted me and was about to walk over to the salon to the Director, she gave me the headsets of her Sony DiscMan (remember that?), and told me to listen to this brand new song by Duran Duran. It was “Ordinary World”

Wow! I was immediately hooked on this song. I excused myself, leaving her to work directly with the Director, and went to the backyard and sat there and listened to the CD over and over again. Finally I picked up my guitar and began to learn the words and the chord chart and began to play it. By the end of their session I had the song down and played it for them. They loved it, they said I played it beautifully. Then the Director said to me, “what does that have to do with our show?”

“Nothing”…

“Ordinary World” was released in January 1993 (here in Europe). The song was included in Duran Duran’s seventh album generally known as the Wedding Album. In the US it reached number three, in the UK it only reached number six…

The song won an Ivor Novello prize in May, 1994. It was used in the movie Layer Cake in 2005. The words were written by Simon LeBon (singer), in honour of his deceased friend David Miles.

So, here it is. I love this song. The words are haunting and they are married perfectly with the music. Every time I hear it I am transported back to 1993, a great year for me, I must say.

Here is the video clip of the song, hope you like it…

Ok, here are those haunting words…

Came in from a rainy Thursday on the avenue
Thought I heard you talking softly
I turned on the lights, the TV, and the radio
Still I can’t escape the ghost of you
What has happened to it all?
Crazy, some’d say
Where is the life that I recognize?
Gone away
But I won’t cry for yesterday
There’s an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Passion or coincidence
Once prompted you to say
“Pride will tear us both apart”
Well, now pride’s gone out the window
Cross the rooftops
Run away
Left me in the vacuum of my heart
What is happening to me?
Crazy, some’d say
Where is my friend when I need you most?
Gone away
But I won’t cry for yesterday
There’s an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Papers in the roadside
Tell of suffering and greed
Fear today, forgot tomorrow
Ooh, here besides the news
Of holy war and holy need
Ours is just a little sorrowed talk
And I don’t cry for yesterday
There’s an ordinary world
Somehow I have to find
And as I try to make my way
To the ordinary world
I will learn to survive
Every world
Is my world
(I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world
(I will learn to survive)
Any world
Is my world…

What a great song to cover, Francisco! The lyrics are exceptional. It is hard to not be moved as he sings about the loss of his friend making the world suddenly ordinary. And how hard it is to make it in an ordinary world. They had a number of very popular songs though their career as a band seems short. Well written post, my friend!

You are right, I had not thought of that, the fact that his world suddenly became ordinary and how hard it was to make it an ordinary world. Although I’ve always loved the song, I never understood the title…thanks! And thank you my friend for your continuous support and encouragement. All the best to you!

I love songs that being back vivid memories from our past. The other day, I was at home and the song Field s of Gold came on. I hadn’t heard this song for a very long time and was surprised of sudden flashbacks of places, people and strong emotions linked to the song. Last time I’ve heard the Ordinary World was while watching the film Layer Cake. Such a great song! Thanks for sharing and have a good day 😀 Aiva
