Paxota, the Dog and the 7k…

Paxota is a little shy, she doesn’t care to be photographed…

She’s one of the street dogs of Ilica (Turkey)…

My wife and I were walking to the next village in the peninsula, which is 7 kilometres away and as we were walking out of the village of Ilica, where we spend our summers, this dog began to follow us. We thought it would be for just a few blocks…

But the pack mentality kicked in and the dog kept going on and on. By the third kilometre I started calling her Paxota and she started responding…

Paxota was noble and thoughtful. She knew her place and never stepped ahead of us. We got her water and she would only drink after we walked away. We were the alpha dogs and she knew to wait, thinking that we were drinking water too. When we crossed streets, she waited right behind us and only crossed as we crossed. She is a well adapted and mentally sound animal with such grace and tranquility that she made the walk extra specially entertaining…

She would wander off the path, which ran right next to a highway…She would look around the trails and bushes nearby but then she would pop up. Many times I thought she had gotten bored and left but then we would notice her right behind us again…

I am really amazed by these street dogs of Ilica. They are all large dogs, healthy, well fed and strong animals and they all have a certain je ne se quoi way of behaving that makes them admirable…

When we atributo Chesme, a larger village, with much commerce and many people…and other stray dogs about…Paxota finally broke free and we continued on without her. Later, more than an hour, she found us by the waterside and just looked at us, as if thanking us for bringing her there and left…

This cat that a fisherman called “Balik” which means “fish” in Turkish, took her place. But cats…which I love…are not pack animals so his interest in us was short lived and we took a bus back to Ilica.

Stray animals in Turkey are amazing. Not all of them, but most of them are friendly and not aggressive.
