I AM AIR

ONLY EMPTINESS CROWDS THIS OLD HOUSE NOW,

WHERE ONCE YOU DANCED AND SANG.

ON EARLY MORNINGS IN LATE MARCH,

OUT ON THE BALCONY YOU SAT

ABOVE THE STREET

WAITING FOR THE APRIL AIR TO BRING

THE FRAGRANT SMELLS OF SPRING…

BUT NOW IRREVERENT SILENCE SHOUTS THROUGH ROTTING WOOD.

THERE’S NO ONE THERE TO CALL.

THE SILENT ECHOES BOUNCE ON NAKED WALLS,

WHERE ONCE MATISSE HUNG STARING AT GAUGUIN

AND ALL YOUR EVENINGS BEGAN

SIPPING LEMONADE OR TEA,

AND MAYBE THINKING OF THE SEA…

IN THOSE DAYS THIS HOUSE WAS PAINTED GREEN

AND EVERYTHING INSIDE WAS BRIGHT AND CLEAN,

BUT NOW THE WINDOWS HAVE BUT BROKEN GLASS,

AND APRILS, SPRINGS AND WE HAVE PASSED.

I HEAR YOUR SONG, A WHISPER IN THE WIND

REMINDING ME OF HAPPY THINGS.

AND LIKE YOU, THE SHADOWS ON THE WALLS

BEGAN TO DANCE

I SAW THEM ONCE…

I WILL ALWAYS ROAM THE MANY SHADOWS HERE,

THE BALCONY, YOUR EMPTY ROOM

WHERE I STILL FEEL THE WARMTH OF JUNE.

MAYBE YOU KNEW I’D NEVER LEAVE THIS HOUSE,

FOR I STILL FEEL THE LOVE AND PEACE THAT’S THERE,

FOR I AM AIR.
